More than five million objects are housed in the natural sciences storerooms of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. They are part of one of the ten largest, oldest and most important of such collections in Germany. Now, thanks to the new museum project, selected pieces are going to be presented in a public exhibition for the first time ever. With the new museum, the city of Halle (Saale) is going to have an excellent location of scientific knowledge for the studying, viewing, conveying and exploration of natural sciences. Parallel to this, a new natural history collection depot is also being developed for biodiversity research, the education of the history of natural sciences, and academic training. Data and specialized knowledge are to be increasingly integrated into international research collaborations, and the museum is to be expanded into a leading competence centre for scientific preparation and custodial conservation. Furthermore, an interface between research, education and public relations is planned for the sphere of agricultural testing (keywords: "monoculture cultivation of maize"). Thus, visitors, students and pupils will have the opportunity of gaining insights into the research results of long-term field experiments.

The demands faced by a newly created university museum of natural sciences are high. In particular, the project will supply the collections of the Zoological Department, the Julius Kühn Museum for Domestic Animal Knowledge and the Geiseltal Museum with sustainable, long-term security and custodial maintenance. Furthermore, the transferal of the natural sciences collections currently housed in less than satisfactory premises is also an aspect of this project. The quality of in-house research will be increased, while external research and public access to scientific data will explicitly be encouraged. With the museum project, the University has the goal of increasing both its engagement in environmental education and museum-based learning. And due to the museum's expertise on issues regarding biodiversity, scientific history, custodial standards and environmental education, the museum is going to build networks between nature conservation, science, education, business, the public, the media and the cultural worlds. The plans are ambitious. A project manager was appointed in the summer of 2008, and the establishment of a public exhibition is planned for 2013. Further information about the project and the specific sub-collections can be found under the appropriate headings and at the webpage mentioned above.
