The permanent exhibition covers the pre- and early history of the Saale region, the cultural and technological history of the mills and millers of the Lower Saale Valley, and the numismatic cabinet with the Ascanian coinage from the 12th to 19th century. The historic mineral collection currently features 180 types of minerals from 240 different locations in the Harz Mountains. The modern presentation of the collection is sponsored by the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt. Museum Schloss Bernburg regularly presents special exhibitions on cultural and historical topics.
The museum exhibits architectural sculptures spanning from the Middle Ages to modern times in the Gothic cellar vaults, and houses over 70 medieval instruments of torture (with accompanying historical illustrations and explanatory texts) in an exhibition space that spans 350 square meters. One of the darkest chapters of the Middle Ages is presented: From the chastity belt to the torture chair, from the iron maiden to the garrotte.
The ascent to the keep of the 44-meter-high Roman tower is an exceptional experience. In the tower room of the so-called Eulenspiegelturm ("Owlglass Tower"), the legendary court jester Till Owlglass once looked for approaching enemies while holding watch as the tower trumpeter of the Count of Anhalt-Bernburg and surreptitiously ate a meal from the royal table. The Museum Schloss Bernburg participates in the decentralised exhibition projects Faszination Natur ("Fascination Nature") and Gemeinsam sind wir Anhalt ("Together We Are Anhalt"). The projects are part of Agenda 21 and are funded by the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt.
As part of the museum educational theory and practice, Museum Schloss Bernburg offers regular workshops, study groups, holiday projects and theme-oriented events for kindergartens, after-school groups and schools. A fanciful and beautiful surprise party awaits birthday children from 5 to 13 years of age in the rooms of Museum Schloss Bernburg. Please request the latest information in this regard!
