The Music Museum of the city of Halle (Saale) was established in the birth house of Georg Friedrich Handel in 1948. The collection and priorities of the museum focus on the life and work of Georg Friedrich Handel, the musical history of the region, and the museum's collection of historical musical instruments. The exhibition installed in 2009, entitled "Handel – The European", features 550 square meters dedicated to the life and work of the famous Baroque composer. Handel was born in Halle an der Saale on 23 February 1685 and died in London on 14 April 1759.

In the course of the exhibition, viewers can listen to music and hear explanations in several different languages of choice. An animated Georg Friedrich Handel, sitting at a harpsichord on the stage of a miniature Baroque theatre, talks about eight of his more than 40 opera productions. In the fall of 2010, the new exhibition design was awarded two major international design prizes: The "iF Communication Design Award" and the 11th "Best Architects Award".

The exhibition of the historical musical instruments offers visitors a chronological and exciting journey through the history and development of musical instruments from Baroque times to today. The development, for example, of keyboard instruments from the clavichord through to the harpsichord and the pianoforte and onwards to the keyboard instruments of today is clearly and comprehensibly presented. Sound samples demonstrate the actual sound of the instruments. A particular visual and aural highlight is the church organ from the town of Tegwitz bei Altenburg built by Johann-Gottlieb Mauer in 1770.

Throughout the year, not only are concerts held in the chamber music hall and the historic 16th century wood-paneled room, but instruments are demonstrated in the music instrument exhibition rooms and summer concerts are held in the large courtyard.
