old pharmacy

Gardelegen

Alte Apotheke
The museum is located a former pharmacy, the Alten Löwen-Apotheke, in a Renaissance building from 1685. The surviving historic pharmacy facilities are part of the museum, which also houses an exhibit honoring well-known local personalities from the past, including the poets Wilhelm Bornemann and Christoph August Tiedge, and the humorist Otto Reutter. An exhibition in the 15th-century, barrel-vaulted basement is dedicated to the brewing tradition of the Hanseatic City, including the aspects of cooperage and hops growing. The upper floor, the old pharmacist's living quarters, was converted into a gallery in 2013. About six temporary exhibitions are hosted here annually, featuring representatives from diverse artistic genres.
