The German Federal Government, the state of Saxony-Anhalt, and the city of Dessau founded the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation in 1994. Located in the historic Bauhaus Building, the new institution - one of the cultural beacons of the new federal states - has been assigned to "preserve the historical legacy of the Bauhaus" and, furthermore, make "constructive contributions to the problems faced in the designing of today's living environment."

The work of the Foundation is based on three pillars. The second largest historical collection on the history of the Bauhaus is located in Dessau, consisting of over 20,000 pieces primarily from the Dessau period from 1925 to 1932. The workshop is dedicated contemporary projects within the context of the Bauhaus legacy. Research and design merge here. The academy is the pillar of the training. Since 1991 the Bauhaus Kolleg has regularly offered an international and interdisciplinary one-year curriculum in English for the further training of architects, urban planners, and artists as well as cultural, humanities, and social scholars from around the world.

The Foundation remains as dedicated to the historical heritage as it does to topical design issues with its diverse events on the legendary Bauhaus stage, its redesigned permanent exhibition, and its varied selection of temporary exhibitions. Annually, 100,000 visitors come to Dessau from around the world to visit the famous buildings and take advantage of the wide and varied programme, which spans from one day events to a one-year college course.

A new permanent exhibition has been on display in the basement of the glass workshop wing of the Bauhaus Building since April 2009. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., admission is €4 per adult (€3 reduced rate). Entry is free for children up to the age of 18. The Bauhaus Building itself is open daily and may be visited for free. Further information on the regular tours of the Bauhaus, the Master's House and the Törten Estate as well as on the current work of the Foundation can be found via the above link.
