Klopstockhaus Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock Blick in die Ausstellung Messias
Klopstockhaus
The museum is housed in a half-timbered building from the 16th century, the birth house of the poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (1724-1803). Klopstock, who is viewed as the father of classical German literature due to his work and influence, was famous far beyond the borders of Germany. In the spring of 2019, the permanent exhibition had a new highlight added: "How the Body Came to Be Discussed – Klopstock, Erxleben and GutsMuths in the Paper Age". By means of Klopstock and his Quedlinburg contemporaries Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths (the pioneer of sports pedagogy) and Dorothea Christiana Erxleben (the first female doctor with a doctorate), as well as numerous other voices of the 18th century, it is revealed how the body was discussed during the Enlightenment. Not only did our understanding of humankind changed fundamentally during this period, but literacy and the spread of the medium of paper also made a new kind of public discussion possible for the first time. The exhibition combines 18th-century texts with interactive approaches and modern media.
