Historical Museum and Bach Memorial Castle Köthen

Historisches Museum Köthen Bach-Gedenkstätte Bach-Gedenkstätte, Rotes Zimmer Spiegelsaal Schlosskapelle
Historisches Museum Köthen
The Historical Museum and Bach Memorial are located in the Ludwigsbau wing of Köthen Castle. The heart of the exhibitions is the Bach Memorial, which pays tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach's activities as Kapellmeister at the court of Köthen from 1717 to 1723. Included in the castle tour is the "Hall of Mirrors" (the former throne room, refurbished in 2018), with its late-neoclassical interior, and the castle chapel (restored in 1991), with Baroque furnishings and a fully functional organ from 1754. The museum's permanent exhibition commemorates the history of homeopathy in Köthen, including the field's two founding representatives, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) and Dr. Arthur Lutze (1813-1870), and also looks at Germany's first literary and language society, the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft (Fruitbearing Society). Founded by Prince Louis I of Anhalt-Köthen (1579-1650), the society was based in Köthen Castle as of 1617. With the exhibition "The World of the German Language", the Neue Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft (New Fruitbearing Society), founded in 2007, preserves and cultivates the heritage of the original, historical literary society at Köthen Castle.

Temporary special exhibitions on local and regional history also offer visitors something new and interesting.
