The Halberstadt Cathedral is not only one of the most beautiful Gothic church structures in existence, but it also houses one of the most extensive collections of church treasures consisting of over 650 individual pieces. The unique ensemble of medieval art work was originally intended for the services of the Bishopric of Halberstadt.
The cathedral treasures include all art forms common to the Middle Ages: altarpieces and sculptures, manuscripts and furniture, bronze pieces and goldsmith's work. The textiles that were originally part of the Romanic carpet featuring the Apostles of Christ from around 1170 are internationally recognized as masterpieces of textile art.
Currently, 30 selected masterpieces of the cathedral treasures can be viewed in an extension of the cathedral cloister. On 13 April, 2008, a far-more comprehensive exhibition of the cathedral treasures shall open in the cathedral enclosures.
