KULTURQUADRAT castle Zörbig I museum

Schloss Zörbig Romanisches Taufbecken Museum Zörbig
Schloss Zörbig
Founded in 1923, the museum and its collection owe their existence to the local heritage society, Heimat-Verein Zörbig 1922 e.V., which, under the leadership of the educators Albin Strauß and Otto Schmidt (1898–1959), undertook the gradual creation of a local history exhibition. Awarded state accreditation in 1928, the Local History Museum of Zörbig moved into a former bathhouse in 1937 and, in 1951, was bestowed most of Zörbig Castle, where the collections found a historical setting and are still located today. The Zörbig Museum, the collection of which currently houses approximately 10,000 pieces, preserves and exhibits objects of local and regional historical importance. A new presentation on pre and early history and the Slavic settlement, the history of the city from 961 to 1900 (with a special focus on 1692–1747, the Baroque period of residency), trade and industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the life and work of the children's author Victor Blüthgen (1844–1920) is planned for completion by 2023.

To complement the permanent exhibition, greater focus is going to be placed on the castle itself so as to make the building and its eventful history more accessible to visitors. In addition to the emblematic castle tower, a relic of the original castle complex that is visible from afar, unexpected discoveries for visitors include the prison cells and courtyard of the former district court as well as a former bunker of the GDR Civil Defence. The building complex, a symbol of local and regional identity located in the oldest town in the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld, is intended to be much more than just a museum in the future: the grouping of the museum, library, and holdings of the municipal historic archives, complemented with a variety of activities and projects, is intended to make Zörbig Castle a cultural, educational and touristic point of interest.
